Shades for all seasons

While most people are aware of the necessity to protect their skin while exposed to sunlight, fewer realise that their eyes need to be provided with sun protection also. In the past number of decades there have been campaigns to raise awareness about applying sunscreen with an appropriate SPF to exposed skin.

With the link between sun exposure and premature eye disease well established, it is concerning that in a recent poll less than half of the adults questioned owned a pair of sunglasses offering UV protection.

Around 40% were unaware that over-exposure to UV is a risk factor to sight threatening eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, premature cataract and eye cancers. In the poll, up to 30% reported that they never ensure their children’s eyes are safeguarded with sunglasses.

The main message in this article essentially is: be mindful to protect your eyes and vision as well as protecting you skin. Wear sunglasses offering UV protection that are CE marked through all seasons, not just in the blistering days of high summer (we really do get them here too at times)!

The key is to wear a pair of quality sunglasses that fit well. By doing this we protect our eyes from UVA and UVB rays. What is good to know and remember is that our eyes can be exposed to UV, even on days that are overcast and dull. Getting into the routine of having sunglasses with us and wearing them is very important. I have discovered the benefit of this, having got caught out while walking Cavehill. The cap was left at home that day too!

Here are a few pointers to consider when thinking about UV eye protection. It is important never to look directly at the sun. Pick sunglasses that sit close to your eyes and offer as much coverage as possible, thus helping to protect the tissues around the eyes.  Wear a hat with a wide brim for extra protection. Ensure children wear sunglasses (research suggests that the majority of UV damage occurs before the age of 18). Have your prescription lenses supplied with UV protection.

So even though it’s still Winter, give your eyes a little TLC by providing UV protection.
